SURVIVOR

So I’m sitting around reading everyone’s “delusional” theories, and something big hit me that I haven’t really seen anyone talking about.

imageBeth has been set up for metaphorical crucifixion and resurrection from the the beginning of this arc.

Like Jesus, Beth was taken by the agents of her killers after her own sort of Last Supper.

image

From there, she spent some length of time with her captors, beaten and dehumanized, and like Jesus was forced to carry his crucifix up to his death, Beth carried her own cross as well.
image

imageBeth didn’t wear her bracelet during most of her time at the hospital, but when she puts on her stylin’ civilian clothes again she’s seen wearing another bracelet with a cross, though there is little focus put on it, and it’s barely visible until moment before her death. image

So from start to finish, her storyline is linked to the cross.

And another thing worth mentioning,

image“This is the comfiest bed I’ve had in years." Empty funeral home. Living person in a coffin, sleeping, not dead. The roles are going to be reversed in our next episode, but at this point I’m a believer, and I see no real reason not to anticipate Beth Greene’s miraculous resurrection.

Re: the casket - On a whim I just looked up the Lazarus scene, and:

[Jesus said] “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.”

His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.

Jesus calls the dead man in his tomb sleeping, just like Daryl sleeps where there should be a dead man. And Daryl himself has, in some sense, been raised from the dead; you could say that Beth brought Daryl back to life after the prison, and it isn’t until their morning in the kitchen - after the casket scene - that he really seems full of life.

Both Daryl and Carol have had the potential to represent Lazarus to Beth’s Jesus, making miraculous recoveries through the power of her touch. So I don’t think the casket scene is about role reversal at all; it’s Jesus calling (singing) out to Lazarus to draw him from his death bed.
